Job Hunting with CML Recruitment – A Success Story

by Louise on June 14, 2011

At CML Recruitment, we specialize in recruiting and helping people during their job hunt. Therefore, we know a thing or two about the job-hunting process.

The Cayman Islands is a paradise for jobs, but where should you look, and how can you turn job hunting into a success story? That is where CML comes in! With many loyal clients and hundreds of successful candidates, CML became the world’s largest offshore specialist recruitment consultancy. How do we do it? We help to place you in jobs that are the best fit. Don’t believe us? Read our Success Stories.

CML has used this summer to revisit our candidate’s success stories that we placed in positions back in 2010. We were happy to learn how they adapted to their roles and whether that has evolved over the year. Here is what we found out.

We first visited our candidate Melissa, a fantastic young Caymanian placed as an Insurance Underwriter in the Cayman Islands.

Melissa’s Experience – One Year Later

What is your current job role?

Insurance Underwriter at Island Heritage Insurance.

Was this the type of role you were originally looking for? If not, what changed?

Yes, it is; I’ve been in the Insurance field for over three years now and, within the past year, have been able to enter a new division and take on more responsibilities.

Is your current job what you expected?

My job role is ever-expanding, so, yes, it is what I expected.

How long did it take you to settle into your job? What did you/your company/agency do to help with this?

I settled in almost immediately. It took a lot of faith, determination, and hard work from Louise [my consultant] and myself, and a very warm ‘welcome’ from my employer, to make this happen.

Was there anything, in particular, you did that you think helped you secure your new position?

Interviews are moderately difficult, but you have to look at them objectively; for example, if you’re taking an exam, you’ll have to study to pass. The same concept applies when job-hunting: I wanted to make the best impression I could and, at the same time, allow the company to realize they had a potentially good applicant for the position. Work on your interviewee technique and do some research on the position and the company [you’re applying to].

Is there any practical advice you would give people currently looking for work?

Keep at it! If you can figure out what you’re good at and combine that with what makes you happy, you’ll realize all the hard work you’ve done up to that point has been worth it, and everything you do after that will be much more significant.

How would you describe your job searching experience and, more specifically, working with an agency to find work?

Job-hunting is very difficult; a consultant can help make the process that much easier. There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude to my consultant, Louise. If she hadn’t picked up the phone that day, my situation could have been very different right now.

Was this your first time using an agency? What made you approach an agency?

Very first, yes. I’d submitted a resume to another agency before, but nothing ever came of it. My decision to approach the agency was by chance, really. I opened the paper one day and saw that CML was advertising the “Coffee & Cake social” and decided it could be the opportunity I needed. I met with a consultant that day, but it was gently suggested I try to make the best of my current situation; I had a job, and many others did not and in the current climate it might be better to stick things out until the market starts to look more positive for job seekers again. I did try my best where I was at the time, but I’d already known it wasn’t for me. About 6 months later I got the opportunity I’d been waiting for when I got the phone call from Louise.

Did your experience using CML change any of your perceptions of recruitment agencies?

It certainly has!

Furthermore, would you use an agency again?

To assist with job hunting, I would definitely use CML Recruitment again.
