First Day Nerves

by Gemma on November 17, 2011

In my career to date, I have worked for a variety of different companies and I still can’t help but be nervous about my first day working somewhere new.

First impressions usually do last, so always try and be the best version of yourself when you start in a new company. A couple of tips for this are:

  • Most important is to be punctual, turning up late on your first day is a big mistake!
  • Dress appropriately. If you have interviewed in person you should have an idea of the company’s dress code and just how businesslike they will expect your clothes to be. I always feel you are better to be over dressed rather than to be too casual.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask! If you haven’t been shown where the bathroom is or where to get a coffee from just ask. If you are asked to undertake a task and aren’t sure about something, speak up.
  • Don’t be afraid to correct someone if they get a fact about you wrong. Trust me, having to be called “Belinda” by one member of staff for 3 months because I was too afraid to correct her on my first day, was just annoying!
