This Week’s Top Relocation Tips
by Gemma on November 9, 2011
Changing jobs can be stressful enough, add relocating to another country in to the mix and even the simplest of things can become a big deal. Here at CML we will endeavor to reduce some of the stresses associated with relocating by offering practical advice and assisting you before you move to the Cayman Islands and once you are here.
Part of my role at CML is in Relocation Services and I plan on writing each week on the subject of relocating to Grand Cayman and offering tips and hints on making your move here easier. As I come across relocation questions and situations I will share any advice with you because as I mentioned before, even the seemingly smallest of things can be overlooked.
So to kick things off here are my Top 3 Relocation Tips of The Week!
- If you are travelling to Grand Cayman via the USA please ensure your complete a US Visa Waiver via ESTA (The Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Here is a link to the website which explains what you need to do. https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ It is very straightforward and is something your airline should ensure you do when booking your flights to here via the US. However if you book your flights independently, for example online, this may get forgotten.
- If you have a connecting flight during your journey to Grand Cayman, especially one with little time in between, be prepared that some of your luggage may not make it onto the same flight as you. This can happen, particularly if you change airlines. Fear not, as your luggage should arrive on the next flight, however packing a change of clothes and your essentials in to your hand luggage will mean you won’t have to turn up for your first day’s work in the same clothes you travelled in!
- Remember your travel adapter! I recently relocated someone here who had forgotten to pack an adapter and was unable to charge his UK laptop whilst stopping overnight in New York before arriving in Cayman. Cayman runs on the same electricity system as the US and Canada – 110/115v, but uses a 3-pin plug. However, the US 2-pin plug does work in here too. Also remember if your appliances run on 220v and they do not have dual capability, they will not work in Cayman, hairdryers being a good example of this. Some small electronic items such as laptops, digital cameras & mobile phones, can be run and charged using a travel adapter.
