The importance of a good handover!

by Tiffany on August 26, 2011

I know this is going to seem like a bizarre thing to write a blog about, but this week I have had the task of running the Trust, Admin and Support Services desk alone (eek!)… Usually, myself and Louise work together like a well-oiled machine, with Louise at the helm.

This week Louise has been sunning herself in Florida and so was tasked with leaving me a handover so that things would run smoothly in her absence. What made this week different to a typical handover was that in the previous two weeks prior to Louise going away, I too had been sunning myself in Florida…meaning that we weren’t able to actually see each other to discuss what has been happening for our team over the past 3 weeks.

In a previous position I had been asked by a colleague to look after their work whilst they were away…and that was pretty much as far as their ‘hand over’ went. What ensued over the next week while they were away was pure chaos; I had people calling about jobs that I hadn’t been told we had, candidates calling for feedback on interviews I didn’t know had taken place and just general confusion.

In contrast this week I was left with a whole folder of notes with every detail I could possibly need and more, meaning that my first week back in the office has been smooth and hopefully when Louise returns next week there will be no surprises…well only good ones!

The moral of the story is ALWAYS make sure you are up to date with your work and that you leave a detailed handover, it will not only make the person who is covering life’s easier it will also make yours so much easier when you return so that all that’s left to do is relax and have a good holiday!
