Moving abroad, some useful tips…….

by Gemma on March 2, 2012

It is exciting to be relocating overseas but it can also be a daunting experience, especially trying to figure out what needs to be done first. Here is some advice……

1)     Make a complete list of what you are taking and what you plan on leaving behind.

2)     Check with the immigration department of the country you are moving to for specific requirements. If you are moving abroad for a job, the recruitment company, or the company that you will be working for, should assist you with the entry requirements etc.

3)     If you are to be receiving pay while living abroad then you will need to investigate opening a bank account there. You will need to find out the foreign banks requirements in order to open an account. It is best to ensure that your domestic bank account has enough money in it to support you for at least a month. Call your domestic bank and inform them you will be moving so that they do not impose a debit/credit card freeze, they may otherwise be suspicious if your card is used in another country.

4)     Notify your post office, subscription publications and other correspondents of your moving date and provide them with a forwarding address

5)     Check your club memberships and cancel them, if they will not provide a refund, perhaps you can transfer the membership to a friend?

6)     Consult a veterinarian if you have pets to find out what if any are the restrictions and requirements in transferring your pet abroad.

7)     If you have children investigate schools and prepare to register your children into new schools and transfer school records.

8)     Transfer medical records and get necessary prescriptions in advance of the move.

9)     Research a shipping company and once you have found one keep detailed records and receipts of moving expenses.

10)  Make travel arrangements.
