Little Cayman

by Gemma on March 9, 2012

Little Cayman is only thirty minutes away from Grand Cayman and as its name implies is the smallest of the Cayman Islands and where I enjoyed spending last weekend. The whole island is coral and sand and the Islands capital is named Blossom Village which is on the Southwest coast. Little Cayman has around one hundred and thirty residents (everyone you will see will probably be a visitor or an Iguana) it is what a relaxing break away should be.

Little Cayman is beautifully un-spoilt, I was surprised to see that there were empty beaches and empty hammocks, so if someone required tranquility it would be a perfect trip. There are however a few things to do, diving is the main thing, the calm turquoise waters make the conditions perfect and many dive on the famous Bloody Bay wall and Jackson Point. The Bloody Bay Marine Park has a coral wall which plunges to 6000ft. If you feel like being Robinson Crusoe you could row out to Owen Island, this is a tiny deserted island where you can go for a private swim. I found riding a bike around the island an enjoyable way to get around, even if I was only riding ten minutes to the little shop.

There are some very laid back places to stay, I stayed at Southern Cross, which was lovely and I did not want to return to Grand Cayman, I got very used to the easy way of life very quickly.

I recommend that you visit Little Cayman while you can as things are slowly beginning to change, an airport which can receive larger jets is being built, at the moment the only way to get to Little Cayman is on a tiny twin propeller plane (which only really adds to the adventure of arriving on the island) so there will only be more development in the future, which seems a real shame.
