Are you a Cayman Islands Permanent Resident with a Dependent Child Turning 18?

by Juliette Gilbert on April 11, 2022

Teenagers can be a handful at the best of times, and if they are about to turn 18, you need to be aware of the immigration procedures to follow in the Cayman Islands to ensure your dependent child does not lose their residency status. This blog will guide you with what you need to know when they turn 18, and important things to keep in mind with their residency status.

Permanent Resident Dependent Child Turning 18

If you have Permanent Residency (PR), and your child has been approved as a dependent on your Residency and Employment Rights Certificate, there are some essential steps to take to ensure they remain compliant once they reach the age of 18.

To continue their status as a dependent child of a Permanent Residence holder, you will need to apply to vary your certificate of permanent residence to seek approval for the child to remain as your dependent while engaged in full-time tertiary education. Once approved, the child’s dependency will continue until they complete their full-time tertiary education or attain the age of 24, whichever happens, sooner.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

Studying Abroad: If your dependent child is away at school, you must also follow these steps if the child’s permanent home is still the Cayman Islands; following these steps will prevent your child from running into immigration issues when returning to the island during breaks from schooling.

Right to Work: Remember that holding Permanent Residency does not automatically grant the right to work. Should your child wish to remain in the Cayman Islands and seek employment following the completion of their education, they will need to apply for the right to work.
