BVI – an attractive jurisdiction for offshore legal firms

by Graham on April 30, 2013
BVI

The British Virgin Islands is an established and mature offshore jurisdiction and is host to a number of leading offshore legal firms. However, despite onshore governments plans to crack down on tax and regulatory requirements in the offshore world the past twelve months has seen the BVI market grow considerably.

This article in The Lawyer explores what the attraction of the BVI is in today’s economic climate and why three firms have recently launched new offices, with a further three forming new associations locally in order to give them a presence in the region.Championed and hosted by our very own Chris Bailey, in a nutshell the conference was fun, lively, educational and informative. I’ve always had an interest in HR, when I was at university and deciding what career path to go down I was often attracted to the prospect of working in Human Resources. When I finished university, I spent a Summer interning at my local council’s HR department before the pull of recruitment drew me in and I found myself working in London as a recruitment consultant. However I have to say that I do believe the two professions go hand in hand and there is a lot of cross over between them.

To practice as a a lawyer in the BVI you must be admitted as solicitor or barrister in England & Wales (not the commonwealth). Whilst there is no minimum PQE requirement for the BVI, as there is in the Cayman Islands, it is uncommon for firms to hire ex-pat lawyers without at least 18 months experience. The principal areas of demand in the BVI are litigation, corporate, trusts, finance and funds. Additionally, anyone with previous exposure to Russian/CIS or Asian clients and matters will be looked upon favorably. Whilst the BVI offers the quintessential Caribbean lifestyle and is ideal for couples, families and singles it is perhaps a more challenging place to live than Bermuda or the Cayman Islands. Anyone relocating to the BVI should be robust and ready for an adventure.
