by Louise on March 16, 2012

This week, CML Offshore Recruitment spoke with an experienced Insolvency Accountant/Practitioner who currently holds a senior position within one of the top insolvency and restructuring firms here in the Cayman Islands! Here at CML, we are always willing to learn more about the many industries we recruit within. Furthermore, we found our experience enlightening. Here is what we learned about what employers look for in identifying suitable candidates for their team.

What Makes a Good Insolvency Accountant

Academics & Qualifications

Many employers seek candidates with a high academic achievement record, along with obtaining a relevant degree at a top leading University. Candidates must hold a Chartered Accountancy qualification or equivalent and preferably also have a recognized insolvency qualification.

Technical Insolvency Experience:

Skills in reviewing financial statements and complex asset and cash tracing investigations are a must. Additionally, you will need experience with senior stakeholders, be an expert user of Excel, and show a high level of aptitude and literacy skills concerning legal documentation and report writing.

Soft Skills:

An outgoing and confident personality is a must! This must be supported by a questioning mind and the ability to prioritize workload. Individuals interested must demonstrate that they are willing to take a very proactive approach to the job and be tenacious in finding the information they want to move cases along.

Personality Profiling for Insolvency:

Psychometric testing is highly popular in the Cayman Islands and has been around for years. Our clients are beginning to implement it more and more as they strive to eliminate the cost of hiring the wrong individual. CML Offshore Recruitment expects to see Psychometric testing become a staple of our recruitment process in the future.

One of the other key bits of information shared with us is that the market here in Cayman is very specialized when compared to some of the major Commonwealth countries. Why? Due to the difference in the type of work and technical environment, when relocating to Cayman as an Insolvency professional, it is not unusual to have to take a step back in seniority to grasp the type of work here before progressing back up the ranks.
