I worked closely with all of these great people in my role as CML’s Summer Intern!

When I wasn’t studying or sitting my exams, my pre-summer holiday was spent applying to several recruitment agencies in Grand Cayman in the hope of getting a summer job to gain some experience in Human Resources for my upcoming university course, and making spare cash for the upcoming school year. Not once did it cross my mind that I would have fun being the intern, and become a part of company that genuinely cares about helping people!

Nonetheless, things weren’t always so peachy for me. The first day of work was like the first day at a new school; didn’t know anyone, I was very shy in approaching people, and worst of all I didn’t know where the bathroom was! I imagine that this was a perfectly normal reaction for people across the board when starting a new job. I have grown to find that the social factor in a work environment is very important as work can become very stressful, and so having a colleague to bounce a few jokes off or share funny moments lightens the atmosphere and makes daily tasks more bearable.

The thought of spending the entire summer holiday working is definitely not the most pleasant one, especially when it’s your last summer before going off to university, but I found that working with CML has given me invaluable experience for the future, and it has helped me to put my future in perspective in terms of the career path I wish to take. Most of all, I have enjoyed every last bit of this internship, which has made my summer much better than I have expected.

So, advice to young people looking a job – never give up on a job search, it will take some time for something to come up, but it will always be worth it in the end as you will be gaining work experience and making connections in the working world. Also, remember to do any task however big or small to the best of your ability, because you never know who will be watching, and the multiplier effect it will have on your future.
