It has been one year since I made the decision to move to the Cayman Islands officially. More specifically, the beautiful island that is Grand Cayman. Today marks one year – which has me thinking about how much my life has changed during the last 12 months.
In March 2010, last year, my fiancé asked me how I would feel about relocating to the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman. For starters, although it was a popular Caribbean island, I wanted to know where they were. Once we pinpointed it on our world map, we started daydreaming about days under the sun.
It took us four weeks to pack up our lives and say our (very teary) goodbyes. The moving process was hectic when we first arrived in the Cayman Islands. Just like any move, it took us a few weeks to find a place to live, something to drive and to set up our utility bills, car insurance, internet and telephone lines amongst other things and I would be lying if I said there weren’t a few moments where I wondered what on earth we were doing. Relocating has been daunting, but once you bypass the first few months, it is completely worth it.
Over the last 12 months in Cayman, I have done so many things that I wouldn’t have otherwise experienced, such as swimming with the dolphins and spending time feeding and playing with stingrays at Sandbar, and have experienced world-class scuba diving literally on my doorstep. I have become very active, spending many mornings running or swimming at the beach so the move has also positively impacted my overall health which was a welcome surprise. It is so nice to know that even if it is raining (which isn’t often unless in the rainy season, then there are some incredible thunderstorms!), it is still hot outside. On top of this, we have made so many great friends! The Cayman Islands has a sense of community because there are many colourful and #CaymanKind people.
To top it all off, working offshore has brought much more satisfaction than any job I have had previously. Having come from a commuting background, the 3-minute drive to my spectacular workplace is something that I genuinely appreciate. There is a great atmosphere in the CML office, and I meet so many interesting people daily.
It is Friday, and this evening a big group of us are going on a pirate ship cruise along Seven Mile Beach for a few well-earned after-work drinks. This definitely is not something you experience in a city so if you too are wanting to live the good life, reach out to a member of our team and let’s see if it’s a possibility!
